چکیده

It is commonplace and perfectly correct to speak of language as the "glue" that holds human society together, that links past and future in a social . intellectual, and legal tradition . No other behavioral capacity is more central to our individual comfort and success in society . That capacity depends upon an incredibly complex set of cognitive systems, served by a set of motor and perceptual skills that are elaborately developed and delicately timed. Every day a normal human being utters thousands of words in the form of sentences and conversational fragments and listens to twice that number more. Every such word must be identified from an ensemble of 50,000 or more forms in less than a third of a second and assembled into a structure that correctly represents the meaning intended by the speaker. Moreover, the processes that eventuate in this association of meaning and utterance form are accomplished in major part without the conscious attention or intention of the speaker or listener . These are the global facts of language use. The linguistic sciences comprise the technical fields that inquire into this process and are responsible for the study of the informational structures, the memory and processing systems, and the neurological and physiological functions that support

The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...

Do Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

Rapid adaptation to foreign-accented English.

This study explored the perceptual benefits of brief exposure to non-native speech. Native English listeners were exposed to English sentences produced by non-native speakers. Perceptual processing speed was tracked by measuring reaction times to visual probe words following each sentence. Three experiments using Spanish- and Chinese-accented speech indicate that processing speed is initially s...

A Computational Theory of Processing Overload and Garden-Path Effects

The limited capacity of working memory is intrinsic to human sentence processing, and therefore must be addressed by any theory of human sentence processing. I assume that the amount of short term memory that is necessary at any stage in the parsing process is determined by the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of the structure(s) that have been built up to that point in the parse. A...
